NaBoMoReMo - Read the Book of Mormon in one month
December is NaBoMoReMo, "National Book of Mormon Reading Month". Inspired by NaNoWriMo, the idea came to me to issue a similar challenge for reading the entire Book of Mormon in a single month. Generally, the best way to study the scriptures is at a slower pace, allowing time for the words and thoughts to sink into our hearts. On occasion though, it's a wonderful experience to read through the entire book in a shorter timespan and at a greater clip to gain a better perspective of the overall message of the book.
My Story
I grew up reading the Book of Mormon regularly with my family, but it wasn't until I was 18 that I read the entire book for myself. At that time my stake president issued a challenge to our stake to read the entire Book of Mormon in one month. This challenge was scheduled for November. I got started a month late, and spent December scrambling through the book at a break-neck pace. I recall reading while eating my breakfast in the mornings, while waiting for early-morning seminary to start, and at work during free moments. I'm certain I didn't grasp everything I read but managed to complete the book in the first few days of January. I followed this experience with another reading in the next two months. These became the first of many readings of the Book of Mormon. As many others can attest, the book contains the words of God, and is truly another testament of the Lord, Jesus Christ.
The Challenge
The challenge for you is to read the entire Book of Mormon, cover to cover, during the month of December. Invite your family members, friends, and associates to do the same. Blog about your experiences (tag posts with NaBoMoReMo), share your testimony. My sincere hope is that many, many people will come to make the study of the Book of Mormon a lifetime pursuit, and to experience first-hand the power that the book has in bringing souls to Christ. December is usually a crazy, busy, hectic time of the year, and amidst all the commercialism it's easy to forget the "Reason for the Season." My hope is that by immersing ourselves in the Book of Mormon during this month, it will be easier to keep the Savior at the forefront of our thoughts. The reading schedule is set up such that you have a nice surprise on Christmas day.
